South Asian Centre of Windsor Board Statement - DETAILS

Donate

Since 1986, South Asian Centre of Windsor has been serving the South Asian community in Windsor. With rapid growth in the community in the last 5 years, we are seeing new and emerging needs, such as seniors wellness support services, youth and women’s empowerment, food insecurity for newcomer international students and rise in hate, racism and discrimination. South Asian Centre of Windsor continues to advocate to eliminate systems of economic, social, and political oppression and so each of us in Windsor-Essex feel fully valued, included and integrated in the community.

Our current campaigns

  1. EmpowerHer Emergency Fund: Supporting low-income South Asian women and families during emergencies (Intimate Partner Violence, homelessness, newborn essentials, sudden health emergency cost etc).
  • Unemployment rates for Asian communities including South Asian, Chinese, Southeast Asian, West Asian, Korean, and Japanese communities remain higher than non-racialized workers.
  • Recent stats show that poverty rates for South Asian (7.5%) and Chinese communities (9.6%) are higher than the national average of 5.5%.
  • A 2020 national study found that South Asian women have almost twice the national unemployment rate (20.4 per cent compared to 11.3 per cent). South Asian women are also more likely to be both underemployed and underpaid compared to non-visible minority women.

In May 2024 alone, the South Asian Centre of Windsor helped women who were struggling with food insecurity and on the brink of homelessness to connect and receive timely support.
