Introducing the Empower Her Campaign: Supporting South Asian Women in Crisis

November 25, 2025

The South Asian Centre of Windsor is proud to launch this year’s Empower Her Campaign—a vital response to the growing challenges faced by South Asian women in our community. As we mark the first day of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we are calling on the Windsor-Essex community to stand with us in supporting women who need help now more than ever.

A Growing Crisis

Since the onset of the pandemic, housing affordability has sharply declined across Canada. Rising rental prices, reduced job vacancies, and higher unemployment rates have placed immense strain on households nationwide. These pressures are felt most deeply within marginalized communities—including many South Asian families in Windsor-Essex—who continue to face additional cultural and systemic barriers.

For South Asian women in particular, these economic hardships intersect with cultural expectations, limited access to resources, and in some cases, unsafe home environments. The situation becomes even more urgent when we consider the prevalence of gender-based violence. According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, 6,000 women and children seek safety in emergency shelters on an average night in Canada because home is no longer safe.

Why EmpowerHer Matters

At the South Asian Centre of Windsor, we regularly see the realities behind these numbers. Many women reach out to us seeking information, safety planning, housing support, or crisis navigation. The demand continues to rise, and so must our capacity to support them.

The EmpowerHer Campaign aims to fill these gaps by providing direct support to South Asian women in Windsor-Essex who are facing homelessness, violence, or urgent financial instability. But we cannot do this alone.

Our Goal: $5,000 for Women in Need

To ensure we can continue offering this essential assistance, we are working to raise $5,000 throughout the 16 Days of Activism. These funds will go directly toward supporting survivors and women in crisis across Windsor-Essex.

How You Can Help

Your support—whether big or small—creates real, tangible change.

By donating, you help ensure that women in our community are not left to navigate crisis alone. You become part of a support system that empowers them toward safety, stability, and hope.

Together, we can stand in solidarity with South Asian women in Windsor-Essex. Together, we can create a future where no woman is forced to choose between homelessness and violence.

Donate today and help us uplift, protect, and empower those who need it most.
